It has a multitude of names, apparently! Whether you call it a docker’s beanie, a salor’s beanie, a fisherman’s beanie, a short beanie or a bonnet Breton (and why not, while we’re at it!), IT’S THE SAME THING !
The Docker Beanie: a very stylish accessory
Yes! It has been given a makeover and is now back in full force in the current fashion scene.
As its name suggests, it originated in docks and shipyards. Originally, sailors wore it to protect themselves from the elements and only covered the part of the head above the ears. It was also useful if you had no hair to avoid getting sunburned on your head! Or perhaps, having your ears uncovered helped you stay alert on the open sea…
In any case, its name short beanie comes from the same reason. Stopping just above the ears, it is not as long as traditional beanies.
So, initially a worker’s headgear, it has now, with its very recognizable cut, become a very stylish accessory.

Fisherman’s Beanie made from natural fibers
So, as summer is coming, I got out my needles, my cottons and my linens… As usual, when I get passionate about something, I go for it! So here it is, I knitted sailor hats in sober colors: navy blue, green, blue-green… And there… I deviated, I even knitted a mustard one !
So, for now, a summer collection. But I’d be surprised if I stopped there… I think I’ll make some for winter, in nice warm wools.
Fashion lovers can therefore find a very versatile item. In fact, it goes with just about everything . Although it evokes the world of manual work, it also goes very well with urban style. From the city to the countryside to the beach, it has a place almost everywhere!
Very easy to wear, it’s also suitable for all seasons. In cotton or linen in the summer to protect you from the sun (or on cooler days to keep you warm) and in wool in the winter to add a touch of character to a warm outfit. Of course, it will also accompany you in spring or autumn, becoming a style accessory in its own right!
If you are looking for a UNIQUE , original hat that, rooted in maritime history, can reinvent itself as an attractive accessory that transcends generations, you are in the right place! It deserves a special place in your wardrobe.
Being located in Central Brittany, France, I suppose that what I am making, really, is a BONNET BRETON, as it is also called!!!
