Why would anyone wear a crochet shawl? Do not get me started… Or rather, yes. Do, because I cannot wait to tell you why!
Spring is here at last. The days are getting longer, the sun has put his hat on, birds are singing, nature is awakening. And so are my cotton yarns!
I had a good old rummage in my yarn stash and hoorah! A rainbow of colours is forming. My head is fluttering with creation ideas. It is 7am and I babble to my long suffering husband. He burries his head in his bowl of cereals… As soon as he finishes, he flees.
Why a crochet shawl?
Firstly, there is no doubt left… Everywhere in the country, people run to their grandma’s attic to get their hand on her crochet works. It is obvious everywhere you look in the high street. Crochet is back into fashion!
Secundly, it is a choice of clothing which makes sense. In fact, under a strong summer sun, a crochet shawl will protect your shoulder, or décolleté, from the harmfull UV rays. Often created with open work stitches, it remains light. And in the evening, it will protect you from the eventuel freshness of dusk. You will know what I mean if you live in a climate similar to mine, here in Brittany, west of France.
Finally, it will add a little “je ne sais quoi” to your outfit, as well as brightening it up. Indeed, crocheted with spring and summery colours, you can be sure that you will not get unnoticed (in a good way!).
How to wear a crochet shawl?
It will complement most of your outfits. In fact you can wear it with almost anything : skirt or trousers, day or evening wear, in a decontracted or formal fashion. And why not even as a cover up on the beach ?
It is confortable et versatile. You can wear it, of course, as a shawl, in a feminine, romantic way or for a boheme vibe (and why not all of this in one!). Worn as a triangular scarf, it will easily drape around your neck and shoulders.
Who can wear a crochet shawl ?
Good news! Just about everyone! Men, women, children, grand-ma of course… Indeed, this is a trangenerational item of clothing. Beware if you do not want your teenager to borrow it from you!
It is an excellent and original idea for a present. A handmade crochet shawl will give as much pleasure to your teenager as a birthday present or your spouse on Valentine day. It would also be very appreciated as a mother’s day present.

Cotton or not ?
Cotton is a naturel fibre. It breathes and asborbs perspiration while allowing the air to circulate. Paradoxically, because it dries up slowly, it accentuates the cooling of the body.
So… Cotton or not cotton for your shawl? Well, it depends more of the air of the moment rather than the look of the moment (this is established, it is very much in fashion!). When the sun is at its highest and strongest, cotton absolutly! In the evening or early in the morning, or when the sun is shy, a shawl made of wool would also be suitable. So treat yourself….
